Carl Clemons-Hopkins’s Emmys Look Was an Ode to Nonbinary Folks
Last night’s Emmy Awards ceremony was a historic moment for Carl Clemons-Hopkins. The star became the first nonbinary performer to ever be nominated in one of the acting categories, for their supporting role as Marcus in Hacks. This came with a lot of weight. “I’m super grateful for it, but it’s somewhat daunting to me having been othered [for being nonbinary], and now I’m being celebrated for it,” says Clemons-Hopkins. “I’m hoping and praying that this will be something humans that encourage people—and the industry—[to realize] that are humans, and humans are more than two genders. How a human has nothing to do with if they can play the part.”In the end, Clemons-Hopkins used their red carpet looks to celebrate and acknowledge the non-common people. “A lot of the lies we’ve been told about sexism are really just about fashion,” Clemons-Hopkins said. “It goes back to the saying ‘only girls wear skirts.'” Well, that’s not true. To do so, the star worked with Christian Siriano on a custom look that celebrates the non-binary pride flag, which comes in yellow, white, purple and black. Siriano has created an impressive off-the-shoulder top, trousers and belt that combines these colors. “I like that it has a subtle sense of drama,” says Clemons-Hopkins. “For me, it also evokes another way to be sexy. I very rarely feel beautiful. I’m getting there and this design definitely helped. ”
Clemons-Hopkins says Siriano is the perfect designer to work with during this impactful time. The star said: “I love that he is inventive, creative and daring. “For a while, he was a designer for people other designers turned down. He dresses in different body types and sizes. He helped expand public awareness of what could be fashion. Jyotisha Bridges styled the striking look, completed with a Love Lola Knits purse, Del Toro loafers and David Yurman jewelry.Clemons-Hopkins says Siriano is the perfect designer to work with during this impactful time.
